A visible mend is almost always a technique problem, not a fabric limitation. Certain repairs genuinely cannot be made invisible, a large tear in a printed fabric with an irregular pattern is a hard case, but the overwhelming majority of small tears, holes, and worn seams can be mended so the repair disappears into the garment rather than announcing itself.
Why patches show more than the damage they cover
A patch shows for one of three reasons almost every time: the thread color does not match closely enough under real light, the patch fabric has a different weight or texture than the surrounding cloth, or the stitching itself is visible from the outside rather than worked from behind. Fixing thread color alone, without addressing the other two, still leaves a patch that reads as a patch, just a well matched one.
Weight mismatch is the one beginners skip most often, reaching for whatever spare fabric is on hand rather than matching the weight and drape of the original. A heavier patch fabric sits differently on the body and catches light differently, which shows even when the color is a near perfect match.
The technique that actually hides a repair
Working from the inside of the garment, rather than sewing a visible patch onto the outside, is the single biggest technique shift between a mend that shows and one that does not. A patch applied from behind, with the edges secured using small stitches that only catch a few threads of the surface fabric, leaves almost nothing visible from the front, because the bulk of the stitching and the patch edge itself sit hidden on the inside.
For small holes specifically, darning, weaving new thread directly across the gap rather than covering it with a separate patch, produces the most invisible result of all, though it takes considerably more patience and is worth reserving for holes small enough that the technique stays practical, generally under an inch across.
A repair that shows is usually not a fabric problem. It is a mismatch in weight or color, or stitching worked from the wrong side of the garment.
Where I disagree with common mending advice
Most mending guides recommend iron-on patches for beginners as a fast, low skill entry point, and while they genuinely are fast, I think the speed comes at a real cost most beginners are not warned about. Iron-on adhesive changes the fabric's drape at the repair site permanently, creating a stiff patch of fabric that moves differently than the surrounding cloth and often becomes more visible over time as that stiffness shows through washing and wear, not less.
My actual recommendation for anyone willing to spend a bit more time is hand stitching from behind, even on a first attempt, because the learning curve is shorter than people expect and the result holds up and stays invisible far longer than an iron-on patch ever does.

Testing thread color against the garment in the same light where it will actually be worn, not the light in your sewing space, catches mismatches that are invisible under one light source and obvious under another. A thread that matches perfectly under a warm indoor lamp can read noticeably different in daylight, and checking both before committing to a repair saves the frustration of a mend that looked invisible at your work table and obvious the moment the garment went outside.
Keeping a small folder of leftover fabric and thread from garments you own regularly, rather than only reaching for a repair kit when damage happens, solves the color matching problem before it becomes urgent. A scrap saved from a hem taken up months earlier is often the only genuinely perfect match you will ever find for that specific garment, and it is easy to forget to save it in the moment the garment was altered.
That customer's jacket got mended a second time, from behind this time, and she never mentioned the repair again, which is the actual measure of success for this kind of work. Before your next repair, check whether you are matching weight as carefully as color, and consider working from the inside even if it takes longer. The same patience with a slow, deliberate technique shows up in a sewing machine tension problem is rarely the machine, and both live under sewing and textiles.
