Three years and a few hundred joints later, I now know that gap was not a hand problem at all. It was a sequencing problem, and it is the same sequencing problem nearly every beginner runs into on their first attempt.
A dovetail joint fails on the first try for a small, specific set of reasons, and none of them are about steadiness or talent. Once you know what those reasons are, the second attempt usually closes most of the gap, and the fourth or fifth attempt is genuinely tight, which is a much faster timeline than the discouraging first cut suggests.
Why the pins get cut before the tails, and why that matters
Most beginners cut whichever side of the joint looks easier first, usually the pins, because the wider spacing feels more forgiving. The actual sequence that produces a tight joint is tails first, then using the cut tails as a direct template to mark the pins, transferring the exact angles rather than measuring them a second time from a ruler.
Measuring the pins independently, rather than tracing them from the already-cut tails, is where most of that daylight gap comes from. Two separately measured cuts, however careful, will never match as precisely as one traced directly from the other, because every measurement carries its own small error, and those errors compound instead of cancelling out.
The saw angle problem nobody mentions until it is too late
A dovetail saw held even a few degrees off vertical produces a cut that looks fine at the top of the board and drifts wider by the time it reaches the bottom, invisible until you try to fit the joint and find it loose exactly where the drift happened. This is not a sharpness problem or a wood problem, it is almost always a body position problem, the saw drifting because the elbow is not tracking in a straight line with the blade.
The fix that helped me more than any other single change was cutting with my eye level with the top of the cut, not looking down at an angle, which sounds trivial but changes how easily you can see drift happening in real time rather than only discovering it once the cut is finished and the joint does not fit.
A gappy first dovetail is not proof your hands cannot do this work. It is proof you measured twice when you should have traced once, and looked down at the cut instead of level with it.
Where I disagree with most beginner dovetail advice
Most beginner guides recommend practicing on scrap wood repeatedly before attempting a real project, which is reasonable advice that misses an important detail. Practicing the same mistake repeatedly on scrap does not fix it, it just makes the mistake more automatic. I think a beginner is better served practicing three or four joints slowly, checking the sequence and saw angle explicitly after each one, than practicing twenty joints quickly and reinforcing whatever error started the whole set.
I also disagree with the common advice to buy an expensive dovetail saw before your first attempt. A mid range saw, sharp and properly set, will not be the limiting factor on your first ten joints. The sequence and the saw angle are the limiting factors, and no amount of saw quality fixes either of those.

One more habit worth building alongside the sequence itself is marking the waste side of every line clearly before cutting, with a small X or scribble, rather than trusting memory mid-cut to remember which side of the line is meant to disappear. This sounds unnecessary until the moment you are three cuts into a joint, distracted, and genuinely unsure which side the saw is supposed to stay on. A five second mark prevents a mistake that no amount of sawing skill can undo once made.
My garage still has that first gappy joint sitting on a shelf, kept deliberately as a reminder of how close the fix actually was once I understood what was happening. If your first attempt looked similarly rough, the fix is almost certainly in the sequence and the saw angle, not in your hands.
